How to Prevent Motion Sickness on Flights

How to avoid motion sickness on planes

If you get motion sickness you know how miserable it can make you feel; these are the tips I use every time I fly to combat motion sickness on planes!

  • Sit over the wing: If you have the option, select a seat near the wing of the airplane, rather than sitting in the front or back of the airplane.
  • Consume ginger: Ginger ale and/or ginger candies are a great way to calm an upset stomach. Purchase ginger candies before your trip, and either purchase ginger ale in the airport (after security) or request it during your flight.
  • Avoid fatty foods: Before and during your flight, avoid eating fatty foods that can upset your stomach. This can be difficult when you’re limited to airport food; I find bagels and cream cheese are a nice alternative.
  • Eat pretzels: Pretzels are a nice, bland food that can help soothe your stomach. I recommend purchasing a bag before your trip, but if you forget, you can purchase them in your airport terminal.
  • Wear a pressure point bracelet: These bracelets put pressure on the inside of your wrists, in a spot that’s meant to help reduce motion sickness. I wear mine every time I fly! You can purchase them at a pharmacy such as CVS.
  • Turn on your vent: Having cool air blowing on you can help cool you down, especially if your motion sickness makes you feel hot.
  • Wear ear plugs/headphones: Sometimes it seems that solely the loud noise of the airplane makes me feel unwell; therefore, I always listen to music to drown out the airplane’s noise.
  • Sit next to a window: If possible, or if you don’t mind asking to switch with someone, sitting next to a window can help relieve motion sickness by allowing you to look at the horizon during daylight hours.
  • Look forward: I’ve found that looking as far forward in the airplane cabin as I can really helps calm my motion sickness. When I start to feel uneasy, I take a break from my movie or looking down at my table and instead look forward!
  • Use aromatherapy: Putting some essential oils behind your ears before your flight can help relieve motion sickness.
